Thanks to the following outstanding authors for a great month. Here is a summary of our March 2015 crew.

My next release is Scars – book 2 of the Broken but… Mending series. It's available on Feb. 24th. My next vampire book – Vampire in Chaos is being released on April 28th!

Great covers: I get an idea of what I want then look for images that can somehow portray my concept. After a discussion with my son – my cover artist – he does up a couple of mockups. I always let my street team see the prototypes.

Author bundles: The Romance Superbundle was the first bundle like that I ever participated in. It had a decent impact on sales initially then that wanted somewhat but we revived interest in the bundle when we put out a second one. I find that it's not about sales as it is about getting your name out there. Having readers see it over and over again.

Giveways: I love giving away free books! I have done many different types of giveways from facebook parties, draws through my websites, monthly contests, and large donations of books to libraries that have requested materials. It's all about getting your name out there.

Reviews are huge. I do contact blogs and put out a call for readers through social media, however I have been blessed with receiving most of my reviews from my readers.

You publish fiction and non-fiction plus different genres.
Changing hats meant rising slower in different genres as I wasn't trying to attract just one audience I was trying to attract and hold multiple audiences. Now however, many of readers have crossed from one genre to the other with me

Next: IN HIGH COTTON is the third book in The Granny Series that I co-author with Kelsey Browning. Its humorous women’s fiction and we like to say, “Honey, these are not your momma’s grannies. These gals are more like Dirty Harry…only female, over 50, and from the south.”

My social media relationships are critical. Funny you should mention newsletters. The truth is my social media builds my newsletter, not vice-versa. I’ve been active on multiple platforms for years, and built it slowly. Interacting with people is really the only way to build and get active followers.

Book signings: Folks can stay up-to-date on where I’ll be when on my website www.NancyNaigle.com under OTHER STUFF or on my author page on Amazon. My next big event is at the Barbara Vey Reader Luncheon in Milwaukee, WI. The luncheon is sold out, but we also do Friday night Q&A and a Saturday signing which are both open to the public. I hope we’ll see some of y’all there.

Great covers: I love my covers too. Just as important as the cover is the title and my Facebook fans are very active in naming my books. That is so much fun. I’m very hands-on in the cover process and my focus is on the image matching the feel of the book

Book trailers: Book videos are a fun way to give people a taste of the story. I like them because it gives a more visual experience, rather than just words or a static book cover.

Author bundles: I was asked by Dianna Love to be a part of THE PERFECT 10 and I was so thrilled to be with some authors that I really respected in that collection. I gained lots of new readers that wouldn’t have normally picked up my stories. I know that because they point blank said it in their reviews and letters. I thought that was really neat. The focus was to cross-expose our work and it worked perfectly.

Co-authored books: All three of those ventures were born out of ideas that I absolutely adored and believed in. So, the story came first and then we decided to work it together. It’s interesting too that the process of working with those authors has been very different in each case, but I’d call every single one a success.

Free books: I’ve given away a lot of books for free, especially at Book Expo America where I do giveaways and book signings each year. The readers pay a fee to get in to the event and meeting them is totally worth the trade-off to me. I’ve made some great connections and faithful readers through Book Expo/BookCon.

NEXT: ...my fourth thriller, The Warrior’s Debt will be published before the 9th of March. As it happens, I’m currently scrambling around to get everything done before pressing the button.

Social media: I was much more active on Twitter previously but have reduced it a lot now. Engagement with readers on Twitter or any other social media channels but I can’t say that I’ve got increased sales because of Twitter. Facebook is a different animal. Most of my Facebook likes are those who’ve read my books.

Paid ads: I have used paid advertising quite successfully. They give a temporary boost to the rankings and if there is a word of mouth buzz around the books, the rankings can have a long tail.

Covers: I use Akira on Fiverr for my books. I can’t praise him enough. He’s not only reasonably priced but has an extremely fast turnaround time.

Support groups: I am a member of the The Writer’s Café on Kboards. It is a fantastic forum where successful authors share tips and best practices. I strongly recommend it to any indie author.

Free books: All those who sign up to my mailing list, get my first thriller, The Warrior free. In addition, if they join my Launch Team, they also get advance copies of all my upcoming releases, free.

My mailing list and Launch Team help me enormously in getting me reviews and also the paid purchases that Amazon and other retailer’s value. This helps boost my book rankings in the initial weeks of a release.

Blogging: I want to make my blog as the starting point for my readers’ journey but I am nowhere near that point. Currently my blog serves as yet another discovery platform for my books. I also use it to share my writing experiences with other authors.

Next: Devil’s Dawn should be out around the end of March or early April.

Social media: My reader relationships are everything to me. I encourage my readers to contact me and share my email freely in my books, on my Amazon author page, and on my website as well. I try to do some work on Twitter, Facebook or Goodreads every day or two.

I do have a reader list. I include a link to sign up for my newsletter at the end of each book. I think it’s working ok so far.

Free Books: The experience has been wonderful and I love connecting with my fans. I couldn’t have asked for a better turn out for the first two because they have both been really awesome.

Newsletter: I just try to keep my readers informed with books on sale, insider peeks, interviews (like this one) and new books coming out. I do try to build my list but only very passively.

Getting reviews: I rely on my readers to provide them. I know there are services you can use to bump up your reviews very quickly but I don’t think that is right. If you read my book and like it, leave me a review. I ask my readers to leave me a review at the end of each book and if someone contacts me and says they loved my book.

J.A. Jance
Featured Book: Cold Betrayal

Author Genre: Mystery & Thrillers

Author's Blog: J.A. Jance - NYT Bestselling Author
Website: J.A. Jance
Twitter: @JAJance
E-Mail: jajance@jance.com
Facebook: Check Out Facebook

Author Description:
J.A. Jance is the top 10 New York Times bestselling author of the Joanna Brady series; the J. P. Beaumont series; four interrelated thrillers featuring the Walker family; and eight books featuring Ali Reynolds.

As a second-grader in Mrs. Spangler’s Greenway School class, I was introduced to Frank Baum’s Wizard of Oz series. I read the first one and was hooked and knew, from that moment on, that I wanted to be a writer.

The third child in a large family, I was four years younger than my next older sister and four years older than the next younger sibling. Being both too young and too old left me alone in a crowd and helped turn me into an introspective reader and a top student. When I graduated from Bisbee High School in 1962, I received an academic scholarship that made me the first person in my family to attend a four year college. I graduated in 1966 with a degree in English and Secondary Education. In 1970 I received my M. Ed. In Library Science. I taught high school English at Tucson’s Pueblo High School for two years and was a K-12 librarian at Indian Oasis School District in Sells, Arizona for five years.

My ambitions to become a writer were frustrated in college and later, first because the professor who taught creative writing at the University of Arizona in those days thought girls "ought to be teachers or nurses" rather than writers. After he refused me admission to the program, I did the next best thing: I married a man who was allowed in the program that was closed to me. My first husband imitated Faulkner and Hemingway primarily by drinking too much and writing too little. Despite the fact that he was allowed in the creative writing program, he never had anything published either prior to or after his death from chronic alcoholism at age forty-two. That didn’t keep him from telling me, however, that there would be only one writer in our family, and he was it.

My husband made that statement in 1968 after I had received a favorable letter from an editor in New York who was interested in publishing a children’s story I had written. Because I was a newly wed wife who was interested in staying married, I put my writing ambitions on hold. Other than writing poetry in the dark of night when my husband was asleep (see After the Fire), I did nothing more about writing fiction until eleven years later when I was a single, divorced mother with two children and no child support as well as a full time job selling life insurance. My first three books were written between four a.m. and seven a.m.. At seven, I would wake my children and send them off to school. After that, I would get myself ready to go sell life insurance.

I started writing in the middle of March of 1982. The first book I wrote, a slightly fictionalized version of a series of murders that happened in Tucson in 1970, was never published. For one thing, it was twelve hundred pages long. Since I was never allowed in the creative writing classes, no one had ever told me there were some things I needed to leave out. For another, the editors who turned it down said that the parts that were real were totally unbelievable, and the parts that were fiction were fine. My agent finally sat me down and told me that she thought I was a better writer of fiction than I was of non-fiction. Why, she suggested, didn’t I try my hand at a novel?

The result of that conversation was the first Detective Beaumont book, Until Proven Guilty. Since 1985 when that was published, there have been 21 more Beau books. My work also includes 14 Joanna Brady books set in southeastern Arizona where I grew up, and seven Ali Reynolds books, set in Sedona, AZ. In addition there are four thrillers, starting with Hour of the Hunter and Kiss of the Bees, that reflect what I learned during the years when I was teaching on the Tohono O’Odham reservation west of Tucson, Arizona.

The week before Until Proven Guilty was published, I did a poetry reading of After the Fire at a widowed retreat sponsored by a group called WICS (Widowed Information Consultation Services) of King County. By June of 1985, it was five years after my divorce in 1980 and two years after my former husband’s death. I went to the retreat feeling as though I hadn’t quite had my ticket punched and didn’t deserve to be there. After all, the other people there were all still married when their spouses died. I was divorced. At the retreat I met a man whose wife had died of breast cancer two years to the day and within a matter of minutes of the time my husband died. We struck up a conversation based on that coincidence. Six months later, to the dismay of our five children, we told the kids they weren’t the Brady Bunch, but they'd do, and we got married. We now have four new in-laws as well as six grandchildren.

When my second husband and I first married, he supported all of us–his kids and mine as well as the two of us. It was a long time before my income from writing was anything more than fun money–the Improbable Cause trip to Walt Disney World; the Minor in Possession memorial powder room; the Payment in Kind memorial hot tub. Eventually, however, the worm turned. My husband was able to retire at age 54 and took up golf and oil painting.

One of the wonderful things about being a writer is that everything–even the bad stuff–is usable. The eighteen years I spent while married to an alcoholic have helped shape the experience and character of Detective J. P. Beaumont. My experiences as a single parent have gone into the background for Joanna Brady–including her first tentative steps toward a new life after the devastation of losing her husband in Desert Heat. And then there’s the evil creative writing professor in Hour of the Hunter and Kiss of the Bees, but that’s another story.

Another wonderful part of being a writer is hearing from fans. I learned on the reservation that the ancient, sacred charge of the storyteller is to beguile the time. I’m thrilled when I hear that someone has used my books to get through some particularly difficult illness either as a patient or as they sit on the sidelines while someone they love is terribly ill. It gratifies me to know that by immersing themselves in my stories, people are able to set their own lives aside and live and walk in someone else’s shoes. It tells me I’m doing a good job at the best job in the world.

Author Description:
"I spent my childhood writing journals about the boys I loved, especially the ones who never loved me back. I never imagined I'd be channeling those emotions into full-length novels later on in my life." - Amalie Jahn

Undeterred by fickle teenage boys, Amalie won her first literary award in seventh grade for a fictional short story about a girl struggling with accident-induced hearing loss. She's been writing ever since.

After briefly setting aside the creative writing of her youth to pursue a career in education, she found that creating lesson plans for her elementary school students cultivated a desire to write for young adults. However, it would be many years before her first full-length YA novel, The Clay Lion, written as a tribute to a pair of siblings who were close to her heart, would eventually be published.

The Clay Lion's Best-Selling March 2013 release was followed by the publication of Among the Shrouded in November of the same year, the first in a series of novels exploring real-world issues under the umbrella of paranormal suspense. Tin Men, the second time travel book in the Clay Lion series was released in July of 2014, and Amalie is currently working on the final installment of the series entitled A Straw Man, with publication anticipated for mid-2015.

Author Description:
My books are all creations of a rich and sometimes devilish dream life. Don’t worry—you won’t see yourself in any of my books, but if you do, it’s just a coincidence…

I live in the west Michigan lakeshore area with my high-school sweetheart husband of forty-four years. We have two children, five grandchildren, with two on the way. Oscar, a six-year-old mixed shepherd-type doggie. We have an aged sheep, Spot who lives in a pasture outside my office window with a borrowed companion, Dot.

In a former life, I was a registered nurse who worked in the Operating Room for many years. Prior to nursing school, I was an OR technician. I did my training at Marygrove College, and the clinical experiences we had took place in the Detroit Medical Center. I remember going to a mandatory autopsy in the morgue at Detroit General. All I can say is wow! I was so relieved; the only thing going on the day I was scheduled to observe was a brain dissection. After working in the OR for over thirty three years, I can’t stand the sight of blood now.
