HBS Author’s Spotlight – Class of January 2015

This month we have a group of interesting writers with worlds of knowledge and expertise. The author interviews are a MUST read.

Be sure to check out what they have coming next for their readers. I try to pick authors who are interesting studies and ask them unique questions for our Q/A section.

Check out the Showcase feature of the HBS Author's Spotlight. I have included those authors in this class. Also, we have added the Author Bundles we have posted this month.

Thanks to the following outstanding authors for a great month. Here is a summary of our January 2015 crew.

Next: THE BURIED will be out in mid to late March.

Social media has been a great way to get word out about new release, but even better, has proven an excellent avenue for connecting with fans and new readers.

Reader list: I have a list people can sign up on on my website. That way they’ll receive a newsletter from me every time I have a new release.

Next personal appearance: Left Coast Crime in Portland in mid-March.

Covers: I work closely with graphic artist…I will give feedback once we start seeing some designs, with an eye to make sure my overall brand is carried through from book to book.

Audiobooks have been huge for me. I’ve gain a lot of readers through them, and always get many people asking for audio release dates.

Author bundle: the main reason to participant is to expose my work to readers who might not otherwise have found me. By bundling with authors who write in similar genres, we are creating something that’s perfect for our target readers.

Newsletter: I use it to inform people who are already fans of book release. To that end, I absolutely see a correlation between when a newsletter goes out and sales.

Next: The first book in a new mystery series, Ditching David – about a jilted wife who becomes a private eye to nail other cheating spouses, but not before solving her almost-ex-husband’s murder – was released this week.

Social media: I don’t interact much on Twitter. It seems to be a younger crowd. Some of my readers are there, but I find more of them on Facebook. So Twitter is more for talking to other writers, I find. But the secret to building any kind of following – be it on Twitter or Facebook or simply a following of readers who buy and read your books – is to be prolific, and to be accessible.

Reader list: There’s a signup link in the back of all my books. There’s a signup link on my Facebook page. There’s a signup link right here: http://eepurl.com/xzlRP.

Personal appearances: I have a contact and events page on my website that gets updated when I go somewhere and do something.

Covers: I do a lot of my covers myself. It’s fun, and makes for a nice break from the writing. It’s creative, but a very different discipline. The Sex on the Beach covers are done by a cover artist, since we had to make sure all the books in the series, from three different authors, looked branded

Short Stories: I write long naturally. I have to really focus to write anything short. But as I’ve been experimenting with it, I’ve realized that it’s possible to tell a complete and satisfying story in a smaller package, too. It just has to be a simpler story.

Author bundles: Mirth, Murder & Mystery bundle has been great fun. I didn’t put it together, though. L.J. Charles did, and invited me to become a part of it. The purpose was to use the bundle as a sort of loss leader, and to – hopefully – boost sales of our other books. We all put in the first books in our series, and I do know of people who have gone on from the bundle to read the other books in the Cutthroat Business series, so it does work.

Free books: I made the first book in my series free on all the digital platforms in August of 2012, and gave away more than 100,000 copies that month. It really made a big difference for my Amazon sales.

Next: Book 6 in the James Becker Suspense/Thriller series...Readers can be certain the Beck, Beth, Bull and Gunner will once again drag Red Wing to the epicenter of some pretty compelling world events.

Social media has been a vital component of both my development as an author and the successful promotion and sale of my books...provided expansive networking opportunities among colleagues striving toward the same publishing goals.

Personal appearances: I try to make myself useful for news stories in my local newspapers and television news programs.

The best place to keep up with my books and appearances is my Facebook Page.
The page is open to the public.

Covers: Most recently I have started doing my own cover design. I'm not very sophisticated with computer design tools, but with a little help from pictures from iStockPhoto.com.

I believe Author Bundles offer fantastic values for readers and great exposure for authors. In the case of our first bundle, 9 KILLER THRILLERS, our goal was simply to get visibility for our books. If we could garner enough sales to cover our costs in compiling and marketing the promotion, we thought we would be more than happy.

eBooks and POD printing have opened the door for tons of aspiring writers who had little opportunity to have their voices heard before the digital age.

In the early days of KDP Select, Amazon…gave your free books visibility on bestseller lists that led to many sales. Those algorithms have changed, and in my opinion, free books are no longer a viable way to get noticed via bestseller lists. Giveaways still give your book a chance to be read.

Next: SuperCell is a spin-off novella from my FBI thriller, The Ninth District. It features the secondary hero character from TND, Special Agent Ross Fruen, joining the FBI's Hostage Rescue Team.

Social media: Twitter has been a great place for me to form relationships with other independent authors as well as readers. I have reading and writing friends from around the world now.

Reader list: I do maintain a reader list, in fact a couple. I started an email/newsletter (too late) and try to offer unique content to those fans/readers. This includes giveaways of books by other authors that have a meaning to me, sharing more personal information and a status on my writing projects.

Novellas: I'm committed to writing at least a series of 3 novellas in the FBI HRT Critical Incident series. If it finds a following, I'll keep it up. The novella series to me is more like a television series, each alone is entertaining, while the compilation tells the bigger story and character development. I believe some readers are looking for the shorter book, one that can be read in one sitting, maybe on their smartphone.

Author bundles: It is meant to be a sampler that was free or inexpensive that gave the reader a taste of a number of different authors in the same genre, not complete books, but sample chapters that readers could read and decide if they wanted to buy one of the books they liked.

Giveaways: A few years ago, I was exclusive with Amazon... It was part of the game to improve the visibility of my book on Amazon and it worked great for a year or so. The game continues to change.

The Ninth District in Spanish: ...is something I did early on as an experiment. Finding a good translator, someone who can retell your story in a different language, is difficult. And finding a good translator is expensive.

I sell a few ebooks and paper books in Spanish, but if it was simply a business decision, I probably wouldn’t do it today. At least not yet. I don’t think the Spanish reading audience is large enough on the ebook platform

Reviews: On launch, I ask my fans for reviews as well as some bloggers in the genre. After that, I ask for reviews at the end of the book and let them come in as they come in. A small percentage of readers take the time to write reviews.

Next: JOSHUA AND THE LIGHTNING ROAD. Book 1 in my fantasy adventure series for kids comes out May, 2015 (book 2 expected December 2015). Set in an imaginary dark world that steals human children for work slaves, the book is magical and adventure-packed, filled with lots of friendships, battles, and bad guys.

Social media: It’s taken almost four years to gain the following I have on Twitter. I believe building any social media takes time and networking. As I’m connected to so many now (over 9,000) I work best in Lists that I create where I catalogue folks. This makes it handy to foster relationships in little pockets such as children authors, thriller authors, book bloggers, etc.

Short story: This collection, THE DARK INSIDE, was created during a writer’s retreat. It was hard for me to leave my characters behind, and this was a way to create new stories of them between books 1 and 2 in my Element Trilogy. It definitely gives folks a sample of my work and also provides readers extra insight into the characters. I’d love to offer a copy for free to anyone here who wants to read it. Just email me your e-book format preference.

Deadly Dozen: I was so thrilled that my publisher, Imajin Books, invited me to be a part of this collection with book 1 in my bestselling paranormal suspense trilogy, A HUMAN ELEMENT! There definitely has been cross over in sales to book 2, A HIDDEN ELEMENT, from this. As a collective, we have especially benefited from cross promotion of this book bundle.

Free books: Unless you have several books out, I don’t recommend giving books away for free.

Giving away the first book in a series of many can be fruitful, I’ve heard. It helps draw in new readers to your work. My publisher sets the reduced pricing of my books and I can opt-in to so many promotions a year. We work well in setting the pricing along with timely advertising that does boost sales, exposure, and ultimately leads to more reviews.

Book tours: Virtual book tours are fun and, if the hosts are well-targeted with a large following, can give quite a boost in sales and new followers. It’s a great way to share posts on topics in your books, engage with readers, and gain new readers and followers on social media.

Section on your website called Authors: I love sharing what I learn with other writers of all levels. I once was a new writer just emerging from my writing cave to learn my craft and meet my peers, and I often think many writers don’t realize how much they learn as they grow – and how much others can learn from them.

Reviews: Book bloggers are a great way to get reviews for your books. For every new release I send out so many copies a few months in advance of publication to dozens of vetted book bloggers. I wrote a post here about how to get best-fit book reviewers.

NEW: Black Rose was just released. It stands alone but continues the story of the Project's struggle with AEON, a centuries old conspiracy of powerful men bent on dominating the world.

Social media: I don't work at it much as it can be a terrible time consumer with unknown results. I do acknowledge new follows and I like to announce things or share progress on Facebook.

Reader list: I have an opt-in mailing list. Each book has a link for readers to sign up for my newsletter. For me, that's the best way. Sometimes people email me and request inclusion. I limit mailings to announcements of new releases…

Covers and reader Involvement: I have a great cover designer, Neil Jackson. He's a joy to work with. When he sends me a concept, I generally post it on Facebook and ask for feedback. I tell Neil the basic plot and suggest key images.

Book trailers: I like these a lot. They're fun, but I don't think they've made any difference. It's hard to know, though.

Audio books: I don't know, but I don't think it's had any impact on sales. It's possible the audio books have brought in new readers. The problem with them is that there is no real venue out there for Indies to promote them.

Free Books: Free promos have worked extremely well for me. I've given away somewhere around 200,000 books over the past few years. Sales always spike after a freebie. The key is to get listed on one of the major sites…

Newsletter: The purpose of the newsletter is to announce new releases and any significant developments. I think it helps launch a new release.

Next: My next release is Second Debt (Indebted #3) along with a new Contemp Romance called Forbidden Flaws.

Social media: I think social media is incredibly important. I spend hours a day online, interacting with amazing readers, authors I've grown close with, and generally keeping visible in this digital age.

Reader list: I have a newsletter that I send out whenever I have a new release.

Personal appearances: I have a lot of signings booked in 2015, which is going to be tricky with the amount of deadlines I have. The next signing I'll be at will be Little Rock on 11th July 2015, followed by Love n Vegas, Penned.com, New York and Montreal.

Covers: I have a very hands on approach. As I'm writing the book I'll know more and more what is needed on the front. By the time I approach an artist, I have a pretty good idea of the character and 'shade' of the book.

Captured Boxed Set: 9 Alpha Bad-Boys Who Will Capture Your Heart: I think author bundles did a great job for sharing readerships and alerting new books to different fans. Sales were consistent, regardless that my book was available with other content.

Free books: I donate a lot of free books, both signed and ebooks. I've had nothing but good experiences and won't stop.

Book trailer: I have many trailers (some that I've made myself, bought, and had some incredible readers make for me.) I think it's not a sale's tool, more like an extra level of exposure.

Reviews: I'm very lucky that my readers are very vocal about liking (or disliking) my work. I do blog tours on new releases and have one title on Netgalley but that's it.

Author's Blog: Kristen Ashley

Author Description:
Kristen Ashley was born in Gary, Indiana, USA and nearly killed her mother and herself making it into the world, seeing as she had the umbilical cord wrapped around her neck (already attempting to accessorise and she hadn't taken her first breath!). Her mother said they took Kristen away, put her Mom back in her room, her mother looked out the window, and Gary was on fire (Dr. King had been assassinated four days before). Kristen's Mom remembered thinking it was the end of the world. Quite the dramatic beginning.

Nothing's changed.

Kristen grew up in Brownsburg, Indiana and has lived in Denver, Colorado and the West Country of England. Thus, she's blessed to have friends and family around the globe. Her family was (is) loopy (to say the least) but loopy is good when you want to write. They all lived together on a very small farm in a small farm town in the heartland. She grew up with Glenn Miller, The Everly Brothers, REO Speedwagon and Whitesnake (and the wardrobes that matched).

Needless to say, growing up in a house full of music, clothes and love was a good way to grow up.

And as she keeps growing, it keeps getting better.

Author Description:
I grew up in a small rural town in Oklahoma where our favorite entertainment on summer evenings was to sit outside under the stars and tell stories. When I went to bed at night, instead of a lullaby, I got a story. That could be due to the fact that everybody in my family has a singing voice like a bullfrog with laryngitis, but they sure could tell stories--ghost stories, funny stories, happy stories, scary stories.

For as long as I can remember I've been a storyteller. Thank goodness for computers so I can write down my stories. It's hard to make listeners sit still for the length of a book! Like my family's tales, my stories are funny, scary, dramatic, romantic, paranormal, magic.

Besides writing, my interests are reading, eating chocolate and riding my Harley.

Currently I have written four Death by Chocolate mysteries: Death by Chocolate; Murder, Lies and Chocolate; The Great Chocolate Scam; and Chocolate Mousse Attack as well as three Charley's Ghost mysteries: The Ex Who Wouldn't Die, The Ex Who Glowed in the Dark, and The Ex Who Conned a Psychic. More in each series will be released as soon as I can copy them from my brain to the computer!

I have sold fifteen romance novels ranging from comedy to dark suspense under the names Sally Carleen, Sally Steward and Sara Garrett. For these novels, I won several awards including National Readers' Choice, Romantic Times Best Silhouette Romance and two Rita finalist slots. Most of the Silhouettes are available as e-books, and I have e-pubbed six of the out-of-print single titles

Author Description:
I have worked with energy both as a yoga instructor and as a body worker for many years. When I left that profession behind, I was driven to write about energy and the paranormal. Many of the situations my heroines experience are created from my own encounters with energy, it's power and possibilities. As to the "writing," well, that started when I was eight and penned my first book on pink construction paper with a purple crayon. It was a romance that involved a princess, and although I remember very few details about the plot, I do remember that it was illustrated and there was music and dancing involved. At about the same time I created my first story, I discovered Nancy Drew and my love for reading was born. It has only grown over the years, and I am rarely without a huge to-be-read stack, and a book within easy reach. I'm a USA Today Bestselling Author of award-winning women's fiction and young adult novels. All of my stories combine romance, mystery, and paranormal elements. The paranormal, because it's a huge part of my life, the adventure and romance because I haven't ever outgrown my early reading adventures with Nancy, Ned, Bess and George. I live in the frozen north with my husband, whose TBR stack is taller than mine, and two felines who have been known to add entire pages to a manuscript without telling me.

Author Description:
About USA Today Bestselling Author Stephanie Queen Once upon a time, there was a young story teller in the kingdom...er, queendom. Then she grew up and... er, no... she never actually did grow up. That's not to say she didn't get old, or more old, but not terribly old, more like middle-aged really. Okay, so she was no longer short and cute. But really, I always did like to make up stories. Still do. Still live in my own little world--where I'm Queen. Of the Queendom. Hence, the name. (Or whence the name?) Oh, what's in a name anyway. Now I'm sure you're wondering how I manage to live, but I assure you I am quite competent. Except I couldn't get the crown to actually sit on my head in the picture to the left. Still learning... Oh, about me. I love cats. I have a girl cat, a princess technically. Named Kitty. No, I'm serious. Long story. No, I don't have time. Or space. Okay, so I do not have the inclination. More about me. I spend hours, days, weeks, months (you get the picture) sitting at my desk, looking out the window of my castle/bedroom and writing complete fabrications in a romantic whimsical vein. Alright, if you insist, you can call the writing quirky. But I do keep myself amused. Yes, it's true, and entirely believable, I do have a college degree. I'm not saying when I obtained said degree, however. Go UConn! Where do I live (for real) you ask? Among the picturesque lake-filled hills and dales (not sure what a dale is) of New Hampshire (the Granite State) (Live Free or Die) (Tough choice, but there's a lot of tough people around here). What else do I do besides write presumably fabulous romantic stories with noble heroes and amazing, warm heroines who you want to be just like? As if that's not enough, I sometimes deign to teach, cook for the two gigantic very well-muscled sons and try to make sure Kitty doesn't take over the house while I'm away in the Queendom. (That's no joke. The cat's a control freak.) I actually have a very rich non-imaginary life. Right at the moment, however, I can't think for the life of me what else it's all about. Maybe I'll think more about it later and get back to you...

His mother was a special education/reading teacher and his father was a police officer. Though they divorced when Sean was very young he remains close with both his parents. He has two brothers and no children, but he has a very large extended family in the Ozark region (Mountain View/West Plains Missouri region) and Southern Arizona (Eloy/Casa Grande area).

After high school, Sean attended college at Missouri Southern State University in Joplin, Missouri for a time before dropping out and going to work for a TV station in Springfield, Missouri. After a time, he returned to college and graduated from Missouri Southern State University in 2004 with a Bachelor of Science in Sociology, minor in Philosophy. He holds a Master of Science in Criminology/Criminal Justice Administration from Pittsburg State University (Pittsburg, Kansas) in 2005.

After college, Sean naturally gravitated towards social work and investigative work, eventually settling with a job investigating allegations of abuse and neglect of disabled adults and seniors for the Missouri Department of Heath and Senior Services. Sean began working on the first book in the series in November of 2008, while still working full time for the State of Missouri. Though Sean has been writing most of his life, he claimed (as per his blog) that he did not consider writing professionally until he was inspired to do so by a terrible vampire movie. During the film, Sean amused himself by imagining the vampires being attacked by a dragon. Sean has remarked on his blog that he often does this when bored or annoyed with a film--though sometimes he uses Vikings, zombies, or Cthulhu in place of dragons.

Author Description:
Hi. I was born in Northampton, England. As a kid, I didn't read much. I recall being attracted to the Lemony Snicket - A Series of Unfortunate Events books, but probably more for the cover illustration than anything else. I started to read them but didn't get past book three.

My passion for reading arose when I was sixteen and I discovered Anne Rice's The Vampire Chronicles; I ploughed through the series. Later I moved on to other books, some standalone novels, but my preference is for series, such as Charlaine Harris's The Southern Vampire Mysteries.

Although I love to read, I enjoy watching TV series just as much. Some of my favourites are Lost, Battlestar Galactica, Fringe, True Blood, Chuck, Dexter, and The 4400. Anything with a compelling story and unpredictable twists!

I began writing while at college as a hobby in my spare time. It turned out that I was unconsciously writing a depressing autobiography, so I scrapped this first piece of work and didn't write for a couple of years.

The reason I came back to writing was that I realised it's the only hobby I enjoy enough to stick at it. Writing a novel is like a project that I feel the need to complete. I write for myself mainly but love the idea of other people enjoying my work.

I came up with the premise for A Death Displaced a few years ago but only acted on it in 2011. Plans for a series are in place and I expect to release Book Two in 2013.

Author Description:
Shane KP O'Neill is the writer of The Dracula Chronicles, a new and exciting series adding a fresh dimension to the Dracula legend, which combines the real historical Vlad Dracula with a new and different version of Dracula the vampire. He has released the series in two arcs, one that follows Dracula the man and the other following Dracula the vampire.

The author developed a fascination with Dracula from an early age. Like many others he was enthralled by Christopher Lee's portrayal of him on the big screen. It was in his late teens that he discovered Dracula the man and the love affair began from there. An avid lover of history, he studied the period in which the real historical Vlad Dracula lived, 15th Century Balkan, for many years. It followed from there then that with his love of writing he would always choose Dracula as his subject. He built a concept and premise where he could accommodate both Dracula the vampire and Dracula the man.

Away from writing, the author has a wide range of interests. He reads a lot of books from a wide variety of authors, though his main interest lies in the horror genre. His love of books is matched only by his love of the countryside and of course, his family. As an added note, he has lived and travelled all over the world. He has a love for all things historical, with a particular fascination for medieval Europe.

Anywhere he travels, he likes to search out locations with an historical interest and will always hunt for the ruins of an old castle before heading to the beach.

Author Description:
By the time he was four years old, Craig Schaefer knew he wanted to be a writer. He also wanted to be an astronaut, a private eye, and a fire truck, so nobody paid much attention. Other passions came and went with age, but the love of writing remained. He cut his teeth on the crime thrillers of Elmore Leonard and Richard Stark, which may explain a thing or two about the person he is today.

Exploring other genres he soon latched onto horror and weird fiction, falling hard for the worlds of Clive Barker and H.P. Lovecraft. The books of the Daniel Faust series are written in honor of all the writers who shaped him, blending gangsters, guns and black magic in a manner not unlike, he hopes, chocolate and peanut butter.

Research for the Faust novels has led Craig down some curious alleys -- sometimes literally -- and to conversations with interesting and occasionally frightening people. His reference bookshelf, stocked with tomes covering the spectrum from criminology to demonology, has been variously described as "disturbing," "a bit eccentric," and "the reason I'm not dating that guy anymore."

While he considers Las Vegas his second home and visits every chance he gets, Craig presently lives in Joliet, Illinois, the home of the Blues Brothers. He dwells in what was once a turn of the century convent, though he has never seen the alleged (and obligatory) ghostly nuns. The pipes do rattle in the night, though, and if you're standing in just the right spot, they sound like the pitter-patter of children's feet rushing by on the floor just above you.

When he's not behind the keyboard, he can be found visiting Chicago's historic museums, haunting libraries for inspiration, and spending too much time gaming while he should be writing. He also dabbles in sleight of hand, though unlike Daniel Faust, he's not very good at it.

Author Description:
I was born in Montreal, Canada, at a very young age, where I still live with my spouse, Joanne, under the watchful eye of Krystalle and Midnight, two black females of the feline persuasion. In a former life, I completed my studies at McGill University and worked in various management capacities for a handful of firms for countless years.

From there, considering my extensive background in human resources and finance, it was a logical leap in my career path to stay home and write crime thrillers.

My first stab at writing was actually in 1995, the result being my first novel, "Vigilante". Two others of the same series followed by 1997 but all three remained dormant until publication in 2009. Since, besides writing a stand-alone, six other thrillers have joined the VIGILANTE series. I also penned "Something's Cooking", a faux-erotica parody and cookbook under the pseudonyms Réal E. Hotte and Dasha Sugah. I'm currently working on "See You in Saigon", the tenth installment of my series. I have to say, I'm enjoying this writing gig.

Other interests besides writing and subtly persuading people to buy my books include reading, making noise with my six guitars, painting (oil and watercolour), cooking (year round though I love the grill in the summer), traveling and planning to work out soon. I've also been known to sleep on occasion.

If you're reading this, I can't express how thankful I am that you've chosen to investigate my world of books. I live in Central Indiana with my wife, four children and two stray cats. I obsess over details, dream strange dreams and teach a creative writing course for a homeschool co-op.

I grew up in Saginaw Michigan, moved to Aurora, Ohio in 78' and finally settled in Central Indiana where I met my wife and graduated from Indiana University. I'm an occasional runner, life long drummer, and household handyman. Over the years, I've done everything from working on an assembly line, installing HVAC units, teaching Sunday school, to running my own business. But through it all, I've always loved to write.

In 2006, something finally clicked when I heard the calling to begin writing novels - and write I did.

Like many writers, I have a book or two that the world may never read, so don't ask about those. It is my hope, however, that the ones you do read will be good, inspiring you to think about life in a way that perhaps you hadn't before reading my work. Killing the Giants was my first novel, a political thriller, self-published in 2009. I went on to write Reunion, The Rumblin', Murdoch's Eyes, Twisted Vengeance and Creepy. I blog weekly about the world of writing and indie publishing. That doesn't mean I wouldn't sign a book deal, it just means I've never been one to stand still and wait for something to happen. I have lots of stories to tell, and I'm ready to tell them now.

Bestselling Kindle author Helen Hanson writes thrillers about desperate people with a high-tech bent. Hackers. The CIA. Industry titans. Spammers. Guys on sailboats. Mobsters. Their personal maelstroms pit them against unrelenting forces willing to kill. Throughout the journey, they try to find some truth, a little humor, and their humanity -- from either end of the trigger.

While Helen writes about the power-hungry, she genuinely mistrusts anyone who wants to rule the world.

Helen directed operations for high-tech manufacturers of semiconductors, video games, software, and computers. Her reluctant education behind the Redwood Curtain culminated in a B.S. in Business Administration with concentrated studies in Computer Science. She also learned to play a mean game of hacky sack.

She is a licensed private pilot with a ticket for single-engine aircraft. Helen and her husband spent their first anniversary with their flight instructor studying for the FAA practical. If you were a passenger on a 737 trying to land at SJC, she sends her most sincere apologies. Really.

Born in fly-over country, Helen has lived on both coasts, near both borders, and at several locations in between. She lettered in tennis, worked as a machinist, and saw the Clash at the San Francisco Civic Auditorium sometime in the eighties.
